Sir William Tyree established the Foundation in the early 1970s to support the causes closest to him: research and innovation, careers in engineering, and talented students who have experienced disadvantage. The Board he left behind still runs it that way.

Power at the end of the line, where a failure costs a season.
Farms sit at the far end of long rural feeders, often kilometres from the nearest substation, with voltage that sags under motor starting loads and equipment exposed to dust, heat, stock and weather. When a unit fails on an irrigation run in February, lead time matters more than price. That is the argument for a manufacturer down the road rather than a container on the water.
Irrigation, dairy and processing loads are motor-heavy and start hard. On a weak rural feeder that means voltage dip, nuisance tripping and premature equipment wear, and the transformer has to be specified against starting current rather than nameplate demand alone.
The environment does the rest. Ambient temperatures well above standard design assumptions, airborne dust and chaff, corrosive fertiliser and effluent atmospheres, vermin and stock contact, and long stretches with nobody looking at the asset.
Then there is distance. A remote site with a failed transformer is off until a replacement arrives. Tyree manufactures in Australia and New Zealand and holds safety stock of key raw materials, so the replacement conversation is a production conversation rather than a shipping one.

The current Tyree Foundation Board honours his legacy by maintaining a strong focus on these important areas.
According to the vision of the late Sir William Tyree, the Tyree Group of Companies donates approximately 50% of its profits to the Foundation, which is overseen by a dedicated Board of Directors, led by Sir William's daughter Robyn Fennell.
